Amanda Palmer played Q Theatre in Auckland – a catharsis of songs from a variety of times, energies and places – though centrically revolving around the singer-songwriters 2.5 year stint locked down in New Zealand during the global pandemic.
The idea of time this year has been strange to say the least. Both fleeting and simultaneously dragging its insolent heels, memories of events and shows seem harder to pin down to a particular timeframe. Such is the legacy of 2020.
US musician Amanda Palmer is supposed to be putting her feet up in upstate New York, having completed a hundred date world tour. However, thanks to Covid-19 she's been holed up in the Hawkes Bay.
Amanda Palmer greeted her Hollywood Avondale audience with her ukelele and a song she wrote yesterday afternoon about New Zealand. From there it was a long strange trip (with an intermission!) for the Auckland stop of her There Will Be No Intermission tour.
It seems fitting to start this review with a confession – I knew very little about Amanda Palmer before this night. I've never listened to The Dresden Dolls, have never seen her perform, I'd never even heard her sing. But after tonight, I know more than I ever thought I would.
