Last time BENEE was on Australian shores it was February 2020, and everything seemed hopeful. She was playing Laneway Festival, and we were promised to see so much more of the breakout star with the release of her highly anticipated debut album under her sleeves, and a world tour.
The New Zealand-native queen “B” of synth-pop and RnB, BENEE, ended her HUGE world tour last week Thursday at The Novo in Los Angeles, CA. She was joined on stage by her opener, Dreamer Boy, as well as her 3-piece band consisting of Tia on guitar, Felix on drums, and Dylan on bass guitar.
Is the occasion of playing your material accompanied by the National Orchestra a career pinnacle? For many, like Phoenix Foundation and Goldenhorse, it certainly was. Yet they are accomplished artists, capable of complex, experimental and diverse compositions.
After months of Covid-19 sucking the life out of our live gig scene, the feeling of level one celebration in the air was joyous – surreal even. It's hard to beat the energy of a few thousand squealing tweens on the brink of tears.
Red flickering lights on a white drop sheet amp up the crowd. Benee appears wearing a casual, yet deliciously cool, ensemble and the audience young, old, and everyone in between, absolutely lose it.
