The trippy beats of Boogarins’ first album located the four-piece as modern masters of psyche-rock - but these guys are more than 60s beats and bangles.
I spoke briefly to Rapha, the bass player of Boogarins after the gig, only long enough to ask him to describe their music in a few words if possible. He replied “Free Jazz Pop Rock”. It’s as good a phrase as any, but I would be doing a poor job, and the band a disservice if I left this review there.
Boogarins’ sound is rooted in the same heavy-lidded grooves as bands like the Black Angels or Temples, while mixing in rhythmic and harmonic elements of Brazilian Tropicalia.
The band made an appearance in Philadelphia not too long ago during their tour with Andrew Bird, and they decided to make one more stop before heading up to Brooklyn.
