As a songwriter and a performer, Brandy Clark straddles the division between contemporary country and Americana music. Touring behind last year's Your Life Is a Record, she appeared recently at The Birchmere with her band, where she treated the audience to some of the finest songs being made today.

Its Friday night in Gateshead, but this isnt any ordinary start to the weekend. At 11 pm this evening the UK will leave the EU.

So often great songwriters are overlooked and increasingly those songwriters are escaping from the shadows and into the limelight.

Like fellow country singer-songwriters Angaleena Presley and Kacy Musgrave, Brandy Clark has a wonderful, at times sassy, sense of humour. She starts off a little serious, a little dark, but still okay, but then around the fourth song she lets her mask drop.

Which is a typically self-effacing remark: songs as thoughtful as this should be enjoyed by everyone.

Like the best of the current crop of US country acts its all about the melody and the lyrics for the 40 year old.
