The five-piece band six if you count Joe Westerlund from Califone playing the odd bit of shaker and percussion moved around between synths French horn slide guitar and glockenspiel while Mark "Bucky" Wheaton held it down on drums.
Tonight they’re stripped down to the bare essentials – just Tim Rutiliwith guitar and Ben Massarella alternating between violin and banjo for an acoustic evening built around their current (sixth) album Root and Crowns.
Chicago is arguably the largest city in the nation where you can still hear the old weird America scratching at the backdoor and Califone lives right at that intersection of modernity and antiquity.
