Chicks on Speed are a female electroclash band, born when Alex and Melissa met at the Munich Art Academy in Munich, Germany in 1997. Chicks on Speed's core members are Melissa Logan (Upstate NY, USA) and Alex Murray-Leslie (Bowral, Australia), who collaborate with amongst others Anat Ben-David (Tel Aviv, Israel), Kathi Glas (Berlin, Germany) and A.
Despite having little more than a couple of laptops onstage they lay claim to a lineage of testosterone-free punk rock that includes the Slits and the Raincoats (whose Ana Da Silva is in the crowd tonight).
Fans of this DIY/electroclash/punk group’s previous work told me that they were huge about 7 years ago with the hit “Wordy Rappinghood”, which just made me grin from ear to ear.
