Enter Cody Chesnutt; a man who will take your expectations of the gig, the evening, and even your life, and lift them tenfold. Tonight, he will not only deliver more than could have reasonably been expected; tonight he'll take this Brisbane audience to church.
The seminal The Headphone Masterpiece is considered a classic in the neo-soul genre and single "The Seed" even spawned a timeless collaboration with much-loved band The Roots.
Amidst the dirty heatwave in Central London, it was clear that the crowd were not going to let this get to them at this toe-tapping upbeat, theatrical performance.
An artist who has made a name for himself in music from being simply who he is – someone who is a little left-of-centre, unapologetically honest and who knows how to write and deliver a unique soul tune. Heading to a Cody ChesnuTT concert, though, you don’t quite know what to expect.
ChesnuTT left no margin for error in the assessment of his hipster cred, donning the same battle helmet, red cardigan, black slacks and vintage cassette-tape T-shirt that he has been seen wearing in promotional photos for the last two years.
And for those already familiar with the 45 year old American soul singer’s story, they will also know that it is one of personal reawakening, reinvention and redemption.
