Country certainly was in far more evidence throughout the set, but it's bluegrass that remains the defining sound of Della Mae, which just released its second self-titled disc.
In the midst of a Northeast run in support of their self-titled Rounder release, "Della Mae," the band took the stage on a rainy Sunday evening and displayed their total command of their instruments, both vocal and stringed.
This World Oft Can Be, which marked the Boston-bred string band’s debut for Rounder Records, only hinted at the masterful performances on its new eponymous follow-up.
The group played a tiny club Saturday night, had two shows at this venerable club tonight, one more at a rock club nearby tomorrow and a day-time tour linked with food stops also on Tuesday.
At the end of a recent show at The Birchmere, everyone on stage — except for mandolin player Tristan Scroggins, who his bandmates call “Mr. Sadie” (playing on the band’s name, Sister Sadie) — was a woman.
