The revered Brit jazz pianist and composer was in town for two very special solo concerts which were also The Vortex's first shows of 2024
It was an emotional night for Jo3’s devoted presenter Jez Nelson (athough his own new slot on Jazz FM is imminent) but an all-star cast of British jazz luminaries could hardly have made it a more upbeat tribute.
You could argue that it's easier to premier a project than to take it on a successful second outing, particularly when that premier is a wonderfully eccentric tribute to Charlie Parker that left critics salivating and a packed Albert Hall in raptures.
The differences were magnified by Bates's new use of a pitch-bending synth alongside the acoustic piano so he frequently played simultaneous lines in eerie almost-unison with each other.
