Critic Consensus
Based on 28 concert reviews, the critic consensus is that Duke Special is rated as an impressive live performer, with worthwhile shows overall. Duke Special concert reviews describe live shows and performances as emotive, spellbinding, charming, anthemic, and enthralling.
Duke Special (real name Peter Wilson; born on 4 January 1971 in Lisburn, Northern Ireland) is a Northern Ireland songwriter and performer based in Belfast. A piano-based songwriter with a romantic style and a warm, distinctly accented voice, he has distinctive long dreadlocks, eyeliner and outfits he describes as "hobo chic".
Duke Special (Peter Wilson) walks on to the stage unannounced to open with a gentle rendition of Nothing Comes Easy, one of the few tracks played tonight taken from the early Duke Special albums.
As the audience files into the beautiful, candlelit church with a gramophone track playing quietly in the background, a hum of anticipation slowly builds.
With all the dark underbellies and meanings forgotten the epic singalong choruses and old dancehall verses have half of a sold out Cabaret Voltaire crowd moving from the first chord.
He takes to the stage to personally introduce his support act – something that few headliners have the courtesy to do – reminding us that he’s in charge, that this is his choice, that the show has already begun.
