Emperor at The Powerstation, Auckland, 22/05/2023 Emperor is a Norwegian black metal band. Black metal can be traced culturally back to the 1980s, to a wave of UK bands led by Venom and Swedish group Bathory.
On a desolate Monday evening, where the very grounds of Auckland itself are sodden with what seems like endless rain, it was almost appropriate that the Norwegian gods of symphonic black metal would grace us with their presence.
It’s the final day of Hellfest and the hottest so far, with temperatures reaching a scorching degrees. It’s warm enough for the stewards in front of the open air stages to get the fire hoses out, showering the front rows with water to keep everyone as cool as possible.
