Gang of Four returned to New York with a completely different line-up from the last time the band toured America. Three years ago, the British post-punk band was led by founding guitarist Andy Gill with three 21st century replacement musicians.
Forty years on, playing that rightly revered and acclaimed album live in its entirety (though not in its precise order), Gang of Four posed a new question: at what point does a band cease to be itself, and become a tribute act instead.
Since they created their highly innovative post-punk funk sound about 30 years ago with their classic debut album Entertainment! they have inspired the likes of The Red Hot Chili Peppers Rage Against The Machine Franz Ferdinand and Bloc Party.
