GoGo Penguin is a British jazz band from Manchester, UK, featuring pianist Chris Illingworth, bassist Nick Blacka, and drummer Rob Turner. The band is an exhilarating live act, drawing on a heady brew of influences from Aphex Twin to Brian Eno, Debussy to Shostakovich and Massive Attack to EST.
Taking place in lush Victorian ‘pleasure gardens' a half-hour drive from Salisbury, Larmer Tree Festival is a far cry from the urban localities associated with many of the jazz acts on the line-up.
When I first heard GoGo Penguin two winters ago it was in an East London basement where new recruit Nick Blacka’s thunderous double-bass was inspiring a few intrepid dancers to their skittering beats among a crowd of dozens.
