For almost two hours on a hot August evening in the OC, Huey Lewis and the News brought skill, soul and groove to a packed Pacific Amphitheater and reminded everyone in attendance that great 80s pop still has a vigorous dynamic pulse.
The band’s return to Meijer Gardens also marked a return to the 1980s for a capacity crowd that seemed to truly believe in the “Power of Love” and the “Heart of Rock & Roll.” (Review, photos)
A band known for a series of bluesy, fizzy pop megahits beginning in the 80’s, Lewis often made reference throughout the performance to their audiences’ demand for the hits, and reluctance to accept new material.
Finding a spot on the lawn for Lewis’ sold out concert at the Oregon Zoo took me back 30 years when that video dominated MTV, as we found ourselves in a similar predicament until coming to rest near the front of the stage.
There is no doubt that last night's Huey Lewis and the News gig in the gorgeous Annette Strauss Square of the Arts District was the latter, and that's not to bash it at all.
