Bio
Iris DeMent (born 5 January 1961 in Paragould, Arkansas, USA) is a Grammy-nominated American country/folk singer and songwriter. As well as recording a series of successful solo albums, DeMent has sung duets with artists such as Steve Earle and Emmylou Harris and has featured on the albums of many other performers.
Iris DeMent holds a special place in my heart. Growing up in the suburbs of Akron, Ohio, every night I listened to WKSU, the local public radio station, originating at Kent State.
The singer/songwriter guitarist has been recording and playing out for over twenty-five years, traveling the world performing over 300 shows annually mostly as a solo performer.
Midway through the 90-minute set of her second sold-out night at the Cactus Cafe last weekend, Iris DeMent admitted she expected to have a backing band, but that recent bad weather on the East Coast prevented them from traveling.
But she came out swinging as she, armed with an acoustic guitar, and her skilled backing band launched into the declaratory “The Way I Should,” the title track from her third album, released in 1996.
