With Paul Woolliscroft on slick rhythm accompaniment, they cantered through a brief set of cover instrumentals enigmatically wrapped within elaborate interpretations.
Celtic Connections, long a catalyst for unlikely collaborations, surpassed itself with this union of Cream demi-god Jack Bruce and virtuoso folk trio Lau.
As part of the London Guitar Festival sponsored by the International Guitar Foundation this was following a gig by Eric Bibb at the same venue (sublime by all accounts) and a one-off in the capital by Jack Bruce this year.
Similarly Robin Trower started out with Procul Harum and then forged a career as a superb and completely individual guitarist with the Robin Trower Band.
