First off, a 6:30pm show time for Jason Lytle, ex-mastermind of indie rock darlings Grandaddy? It’s like seeing a movie in the middle of the afternoon, my friend muttered as we pulled up, sun still ablaze in the sky.
Jason Lytle last played in Leeds in March 2017. On that occasion he appeared at the city’s Irish Centre with Grandaddy, the wonderfully off-kilter indie-rock band with whom his name is most often associated.
Whether fronting Grandaddy at the Wiltern as I rang in the New Year or performing solo at the Hotel Cafe while another birthday passed me by, Lytle’s haunting, lo-fi landscapes have always resonated soundly within me.
