Joe Lovano is an iconic saxophonist not only on the national jazz scene but also on the global scene. To have him play as a guest soloist with a top-notch 17-member big band was certainly a treat for the full house at the Falcon on August 13th.

The latest episode in Teri Roiger & John Menegon's “Jazzstock” series was billed as “An Evening of Expressive Music with Joe Lovano & Friends.” Mind you, “expressive” can be both defined and interpreted in many ways; also, not to put too fine a point on it, nobody in the jazz world expresses himself like Lovano.
On the first of two nights at Ronnie Scott’s the quintet played some robust originals and put inventive Cuban spins on both swing classics and Thelonious Monk quotes with lyricism and wit.
