Upon arriving at the cobbled graveyard front entrance of St Mary's church (with the support act having already begun) I could see looking at me in the shadows, by the corner of his tour van, the top-hatted and dark coated, pale thin features of John Murry.

He cut a tall and dapper figure, his understated vocal delivery casting out some fine lyrics to the seated audience as they finished up their meals.

Folk rock troubadour John Murry has suffered for his art more than most but the theory goes that the best art is that suffered most for.

Whatever wind it is that blows through the mid-western United States, it blows into the mind and music of Tupelo-born John Murry. His sound is inseparable from that part of the world, like he grew up hearing folk-tales about John Lee Hooker and Chuck Berry, queued for hours outside the concert hall whenever T

Music may be a happy epilogue to a grim personal story but when it comes to artists like this there will always be a simple thrill in standing close to someone who has been to the dark side.
