It was a dark and stormy night…but that didn’t stop Jon Cleary and his band from bringing a taste of New Orleans to Auckland as they closed out their tour with style and funk…lots of funk.
Jon Cleary is a walking encyclopedia of New Orleans music history. Lucky for us, he also happens to be one of the preeminent translators and torchbearers of the city’s rich legacy of piano players.
After a series of shows over the winter/spring at The Maple Leaf to work on some new material, Jon Cleary and The Absolute Monster Gentlemen brought their national tour back to their hometown with a show at the Zony Mash Beer Project in New Orleans, Louisiana on Friday night June 10th.
A blues and funk festival favourite, Cleary and band slotted perfectly into the jewel of the otherwise sparse music scene of central Sydney: The Basement.
David Sanborn’s new album, Time and the River, doesn’t quite catch the magic of the slender American soul-sax master’s explosively imploring sound, but his live shows are something else.
