They are failing to adhere to the basic rule of gigs - and this at a venue famed for having graffiti on the walls politely asking customers to 'shut up' during the music.

Justin Currie – accompanied by his Pallbearers – holds court in Glasgow, with a set including tracks from his beautifully crafted new album ‘This Is My Kingdom Now’ and fresh arrangements of Del Amitri favourites.

This is perfectly exemplified by set opener ‘Always the Last to Know', which Justin plays with just acoustic guitar, accompanied only by a subtle slide guitar.

Given the banalities and blandishments expressed by many of the current crop of so-called singer-songwriters who rely on a coterie of collaborators, it's refreshing to listen to Justin Currie, currently touring Lower Reaches, his third solo album since Del Amitri went on a hiatus that will end in January.

At his Union Chapel show in London he lacked his well-known spark and finished the set with a song entitled London is Dead; it was reminiscent of Ross’s keyboard playing moment in the TV comedy Friends.

It is not the reverential surroundings of the Union Chapel that have intimidated him as he has been here before on his last tour.

Which is fitting really considering I was at the time sat in a pew at the Union Chapel London’s most ethereal music venue.
