Now split between Pōneke and Tāmaki Makaurau indie three-piece Mermaidens have been bouncing around the motu in support of their fourth, self-titled album. Tonight was their homecoming. So I fronted up in my double denims to hear some new material from one of the Capital's most beloved acts.
Mermaidens celebrate the release of their new, self-titled album with a show at Auckland’s suitably-grand Hollywood Avondale theatre. The 13th Floor’s Karen McCarthy and Michael Jeong were there to catch all the action.
Having recently released their sublime new album Look Me in the Eye, Wellington darlings Mermaidens are currently on tour, Auckland getting the chance to bask in their glory within the darkened walls of Whammy! last night.
The trio, consisting of Gussie Larkin (guitar/vocals), Lily West (bass/vocals) and Abe Hollingsworth (drums) have a sound that’s been described as “dark witch rock”.
It’s a bold gamble indeed to start off your set on a quiet Monday night in Glasgow with the appropriately murky spaghetti western tangle of Undergrowth. Happily, New Zealand indie trio Mermaidens are commanding enough to pull it off.
