Surprisingly, there is plenty of room around the debris field of noise Merzbow creates, possibly because he isn't as intent on the wall of white noise that used to underlay performances at all times.
Set inside an 18th-Century church the stage sits beneath an illuminated plaque adorned by the 10 commandments but the abrasive belligerent noise conjured by the four musicians here seems far from virtuous.
Watching a Merzbow performance the links become more apparent: the 1920s Dadaist installation resulted in deconstruction of the artist's studio while during a Merzbow set it feels as though the building is deconstructing.
In front of Akita – a large table shrouded in black cloth littered with a bewildering array of tone generators sequencers oscillators and audio delay units all fed Medusa like into an elevated mixing desk.
