She opened with Leonard Cohen’s Suzanne and Brit folkie Nick Drake’s Pink Moon; played three songs associated with Nina Simone; and included a slug of r&b hits spanning the last three decades.
The sight of Patrick Stewart, Adrian Lester and Tony Robinson, discreet but nonetheless radiating charisma amid muted gasps of recognition, brings a BAFTA-esque frisson to the air.
But she has earned a devoted following, as evidenced by the rapt attention of the audience Sunday night at the nearly sold-out Dakota Jazz Club in Minneapolis.
