Mick Jenkins and TOBi delivered stellar hip hop shows at Come and Take It Live
Mick Jenkins is not a great performer. And honestly, it doesn't really matter. Experiencing the Chicago rapper is akin to watching a protagonist from one of French director Jean-Luc Godard’s films: effortless and cool.
With support from Brooklyn underground rap duo The Underachievers, this was the first of two shows he will play in New Zealand on his Australasian tour.
Sporting a mustard-coloured jacket and backed by a DJ and drummer, Jenkins launched into his set with a broken mic — the heavy beats drowning out his voice as the audience yelled out and pointing to the air in an effort to get him to turn it up.
Though he’d released several mixtapes before he didn’t enjoy anything that could be described as mainstream success until he dropped The Water[s] in 2014.
