Returning to Brisbane for the first time since 2013, Ramona performed a sold-out show in the 50-person capacity Junk Bar (22 October); slightly bigger than the bedroom she began recording her songs in.

Before long, Buzz Kull, tonight performing as a trio, wandered onto the stage and inauspiciously began their set.

Perhaps that's also the universe where Ramona Gonzalez the lo-fi Los Angeles disco queen behind Nite Jewel is already as big as Lady Gaga.

There’s the odd rogue gig-goer here and there but in the main is a desolate, dimly lit room with a smoke machine.

Before words of wonder cascade off the page - for Nite Jewel was indisputably and semi-surprisingly wonderful - both Upset the Rhythm and XOYO should be applauded for making such a shrewd booking and having such a dreamy sound system respectively.
