The first thought that entered my mind as Pharrell took the stage for the Apple Music Festival was ‘where was his buffalo hat?’.
Being a long-time producer he constantly kept the energy at the Roundhouse funky going through twenty years of RnB soul and rap that he’s produced for the likes of Snoop Dogg Kendrick Lamar NORE Gwen Stefani – the list is endless really.
Even from the creator of Happy the UK's most downloaded song of all time it was less an awkward demand and more an explanation for the 41-year-old singer’s hotchpotch of a set.
Their songs are all fluid rolling lubricious grooves fuelled by blaxploitation wah-wah guitars fervent soul and wailing sirens like a preposterously tight 70s funk session band.
Score the biggest hit of the year (Happy) - and appear on the outstanding anthem of the year before (Get Lucky) - and you'd anticipate a spike in interest that'd afford you a run of shows at any arena.
