By way of introduction, the band’s composer and keyboardist Ellis Ludwig-Leone, simply states we’re San Fermin from Brooklyn, New York.
Looking around at attendees of the intimate Velvet Jones show, dancing, swaying, and staring in musical surrender to the horns, violin, and powerhouse vocals surrounding them, Tate can consider his goal collectively achieved.
Forget everything you think you know about them based on their pop baroque records: onstage the band are an indie pop almost free jazz machine with horns and drums.
It’s the safe way of defining and deriding an audience for music that isn’t easily classifiable into post-punk revivalist or neo-folk or whatever else is hip-but-not-too-hip at the moment.
Lott quietly released one of the best albums of 2013 in Lanterns and his assembled power trio took all of its hip-hop-tinged post-rock compositions several steps further.
