Simon and Garfunkel reunited just over 40 years ago and entertained an estimated 500,000 fans at NYC’s Central Park. Last night some of New Zealand’s finest recreated that historic event in front of a much smaller crowd but a much bigger sense of camaraderie and friendship.

They can be more quiet: two voices reaching out to a sea of muddy people, who didn’t mind that one voice was weak, and in fact helped out by singing loudly to form a remarkable crescendo.

Simon & Garfunkel playing the stages of Sydney almost 40 years after they first split up is one such moment.

The joy - including several Mexican waves - greeted two-and-a-half hours of classic songs including Mrs Robinson and Bridge Over Troubled Water.

At times like this, in an overfilled, over-stimulated Beacon Theater, our evening’s entertainment just gets out of the way.
