The BAREZZI festival has, over the last two decades, managed to attract many major artists to the province of Parma as part of the area’s celebration of Giuseppe Verdi and live music, but getting Sun Kil Moon to perform is a triumph and master stroke.
Sun Kil Moon brought little more than a keyboard and microphone to The Tuning Fork last night, but delivered a spoken word performance filled with almost three hours of subversive comedy and deeply personal human observation.
Audience members ambled to their seats and chattered happily beneath the art deco ceiling of the near sold-out Thornbury Theatre ballroom (19 May), eagerly awaiting the enigmatic Mark Kozelek.
Beyond putting out multiple albums each year and occasionally making waves in the press, Kozelek also appears to enjoy challenging himself on the stage as well.
If you’ve followed the career of Mark Kozelek and his gloomy folk project Sun Kil Moon, you are most likely aware of his mercurial moods and unpredictable performances.
The gig included a special guest, a tribute to a fallen rocker, a previously unheard song and a performance that was as much stand-up comedy as rock and roll.
