They launch straight into Where’s the Bass Amp?, an unbridled opener that repeats the rousing I said a boom chicka boom and samples a woman talking to her excited children as they return from camp.
The band, originally from Bath delivered a fresh, unique sound, blending conversational, old school hip-hop style lyrics with filthy funk-inspired bass lines and the occasional harmonica solo.
After at least two years of wading through crop tops scrunchies and Loaded magazine relaunches it should be nigh-on impossible to mine anything fresh from an era that really wasn’t that long ago.
But let it be known that one of your five-a-day did not take to the Oslo stage in Hackney last night where the Birmingham raised four piece were cool (as cucumbers) and collected as they played their headline set for the NME Awards-sponsored event.
The atmosphere at a farewell show is a strange one to navigate. On one hand, it’s a sad occasion – the final chance (ever!) to see a beloved band do their thing.
