Today we headed down to the prestigious Southbank Centre to examine the latest contender to the alternative indie throne a talented Londoner named Tom Vek fronting a three-piece band.
That’s not to say that Babylon and You’re Beautiful don’t have their place but witnessing a performance by Tom Vek – and it was a performance – made most of the overly safe Radio 2 friendly fodder pale into insignificance.
Island Records have just invested a substantial amount of money in Vek's potential stardom perhaps hoping to atone for the ubiquity of perky Tory house-band Busted.
Tom Vek is no longer the hairy young pretender whose homespun electropop debut We Have Sound promised so much with shades of Beck and suggestions of LCD Soundsystem almost a decade ago.
