The filmmaker brought his New Orleans jazz band for an entertaining concert at the State Theatre.
Their “debut intermission performance” saw nine tunes before a break, mostly strolling instrumentals showcasing the players’ prowess and Woody’s wheezily whimsical clarinet, including staccato shrieks, squeals and splutters.
There’s an expectation, before the performance begins, that in her body, in the grace or strength or certainty of those first few steps, is a glint of mastery—of technique, artistry, generosity—that’ll stretch out and build, carry the show.
He used the music to score Sleeper the early-20th century sounds not only playing counterpoint to the futuristic setting but giving a nod to the silent comedies that inspired its madcap physical humor.
