No wonder Bette Midler felt right at home on the opening night of her first ever UK tour, an object lesson in how to take New York sass and Broadway sets as well as Las Vegas and Hollywood showbiz magic into the European concert arena.
But when many of them are in their sixties as was the case in Birmingham's packed 14000 seat Barclaycard Stadium last night understanding starts to wear thin.
Midler launched her career in New York more than four decades ago, but, as she repeatedly pointed out, the cultural landscape has transformed in mind-boggling ways since that time.
