Billy Cobham, born May 16, 1944 in Panama, is one of the world's most influential drummers, best known for his jazz fusion in the 1970s, with John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra, where he pioneered a powerful style of drumming with jazz, rock and funk influences. He is the first drummer to unseat Buddy Rich in the Down Beat music polls.

Drummer-led bands can be noisy affairs devoted to the antics of stars, but despite being one of the most revered drummers of the past half-century and a founder-member of John McLaughlin's pioneering Mahavishnu Orchestra, Billy Cobham doesn't hog the spotlight.
Cobham's latest project features four French musicians playing instruments we associate with jazz-rock – he's joined by a guitarist an electric bassist and two keyboard players one doubling up rather brilliantly on electric violin.
