The top Italian jazz festival once again delivered a dazzling mix of legends, rising stars, and world-class performances in some of the region’s most beautiful venues
The double bass made a comparatively late arrival to solo status in jazz; due to its' unwieldly nature and obstinately low range its use was often restricted to novelty effects and comedy turns a la Saint-Saens Carnival of the Animals.
She mixed breezy original tunes with such standards as "I Get A Kick Out Of You" and "Don't Get Around Much Anymore" the latter confirming she can convince in delivering deeper emotions not just light tunes about food sugar and dating.
With the proliferation of jazz festivals in recent times you would be less likely to raise an eyebrow if the programme from one of the newer promoters were to heavily featured non-jazz acts.
Joshua Redman's duet with Christian McBride looked like one of the more orthodox encounters on the Redman-curated series at the Wigmore Hall, but the two made sure that if the structures were familiar, the variations definitely weren't.
