In solo performance, Colin Stetson, a saxophonist who's worked with Tom Waits, Arcade Fire and Bon Iver, seems on paper to have more in common with musicians such as British free jazz improviser Evan Parker than with dance music.
With a physical build somewhere between that of a yogi and a cage fighter the American multireedist has built a solo career on eye-poppingly punishing performances.
As was the case with set-opener The Sun Roars Into View, the pairing of Stetson's pulsing, otherworldly saxophone sounds — rhythm, melody and texture, all in one — with Neufeld's softer violin overtop created a fulsome spectrum, shifting between ugliness and beauty depending on the piece's need.
