Striking the opening chords to the evening on her beautiful old 1954 Gibson ES-125 guitar, Devon Sproule sets in motion a glorious sequence of 26 shows over the next ten week period for the local live music promoter Please Please You. In the backstreets of Norwich stands the unassuming and quaint Arts Centre, an old refurbished church which, with candle-filled coffee mugs adorning the tables and seaside art hanging on the walls, seems the perfect place to hear the atmospheric country rock of Devon Sproule and her band.
This thirty foot square of the most intimate of spaces, far from the main concert room’s madding crowd and the rattling din of Esben & The Witch, tonight plays the unlikely host to an altogether different musical experience.
On record, this fabulous instrument is often masked and distorted by a technology that a record company owning folkster from Eigg would latch onto quite logically.
The structure of the concert was good starting with a set by Paul Curreri followed by one by the lady herself finishing with the two on stage together doing a smug coupley (sic) finish.
