Three acoustic guitars surround one chair on stage. Just after 8pm, Eric Bibb walks through the crowd and up onto the stage. Tall, loose pants, straw hat, wide smile. No need for an opening act. The crowd mostly in their 60s are clearly only here for one man.
There is little better than a night at a packed out Ronnie Scott’s club in Soho – especially when an artist of the sheer quality of Eric Bibb is playing.
He has long been established as a cult hero but has never progressed further partly because much of his work is so easy-going and he has never been as musically adventurous as fellow blues act Taj Mahal .
Outside were the towers of Canary Wharf with TV screens in the vast office lobbies along Bank Street still showing the latest reports on the scariest week that their well-heeled occupants have lived through.
