Go and see a band like Jaga Jazzist a genre-crossing collective of Norwegian multi-instrumentalists who skyrocketed to fame in 2002 when the BBC named A Livingroom Hush jazz album of the year and you expect it to be big.

The list of collaborators included the likes of Nico Muhly and Sufjan Stevens but it was tonight’s show with Norwegian progressive jazz outfit Jaga Jazzist that seemed one of the best fits and likely to yield the greatest results.

The 15-year-old Norwegian collective is guided by a jazz/improv sensibility and cool skilfulness that allows all its clamouring influences (electronica drum'n'bass prog-rock classical and free jazz) to mix and remix organically.

The band’s increasing popularity away from Norway buoyed by latest long-player One-Armed Bandit is exemplified perfectly by the crush of bodies inside the Islington Academy tonight which is so rammed it’s almost uncomfortable.
