This concert was painful for me to sit through. In some ways, blues is the antithesis of pop music, in that spontaneity is what fuels the best of the genre, specifically in the live concerts of legends such as Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf and Son House.
Joe Bonamassa was absolutely electrifying last night at the Royal Albert Hall. I have to say, having seen him more than a dozen times over the years, I have never seen him more relaxed, more comfortable or more at one with his audience.
Going to see Joe Bonamassa play guitar is truly an iconic experience, as he ranks alongside Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and BB King, who took him under his wing and had the young Bonamassa open for him at just 12 years old.
When Bonamassa was first on these shores I saw him three or four times in a three piece band. It seemed to fit him perfectly as he was able to develop his playing and stage persona without having to worry about fitting the timings of other musicians into his playing.
It is difficult to separate the new album release from the performance we saw last night but the quality of Bonamassa's show last night had a huge amount to do with the album and especially his linking up with Bernie Marsden and Pete Brown in writing many of the numbers and developing his British connection.
