When John Smith took to the stage at St Stephen’s Church in Ipswich, the atmosphere shifted from reverent silence to quiet anticipation. With just his voice and guitar, under the glittering fairy lights that illuminated the church, he was immediately captivating, opening with ‘Great Lakes’.
The scene was set for something slightly special as I descended the stairs towards the wood panelled bar at Cecil Sharp house this evening. The weather had turned the wind was starting to kick up and there was an air of expectation amongst the small crowd.
How can a John Smith stand out? A few have managed it – the man who led the Labour Party in the early 1990s immediately springs to mind not to mention the Yorkshire beer – but historically John Smiths are barely noticeable.
