In the first of two nights at Grand Rapids Listening Room, the much-heralded South African male vocal group delivered engaging vocals and a stage presence to match.
The legendary a capella South African group Ladysmith Black Mambazo returned to Troy Music Hall, a perfect venue for their two set performance of singing and dancing isicathamiya Zulu music.
More casual listeners know them from their collaboration with Paul Simon for the album Graceland in 1986, but 17 Grammy nominations, and 4 wins certainly prove their appeal way beyond that.
Most famous for their turn on Paul Simon’s seminal ‘Graceland’, the South African group has been around for aeons, bringing the traditional sound and tales of the societal landscape in the country to the wider world since 1960, by way of 1986.
Most of the music I was listening too was coming on mix tapes that artsy-fartsy private school boys would make for her and she would subsequently hand down to me when that boy's time passed.
