Who’s the top pianist in the world? This week at the Pittsburgh Symphony, a pair of star pianists with entirely different styles took to the stage on Tuesday and Friday.
To close out his Tuesday concert with the Pittsburgh Symphony, pianist Lang Lang — one of classical music’s most recognizable names — popped an iPad onto the piano and launched into a jazzy rendition of “The Bare Necessities,” a la Gershwin.
There are few other classical artists who can fill the Bridgewater Hall today but his following is faithful and devoted – the gales of applause and final standing ovation showed that.
Lang Lang then devoted the second half to Chopin, almost his alter ego. The word “scherzo” means joke but the Four Scherzos are anything but. They are tumultuous, sometimes tormented, with only occasional moments of calm, but a calm that brings no rest.
The world of pop has the imminent appearance of One Direction in June. The Country world has Garth Brooks in July. The Classical world had it’s equivalent on Saturday night when Chinese pianist Lang Lang arrived into the National Concert Hall for a recital of Mozart Sonatas and Chopin Ballade’s.
