He renamed himself Leon Russell and a new career emerged when Joe Cocker recorded Russell’s song Delta Lady for his 1969 album, Joe Cocker! Russell organized and performed in Cocker’s 1970 Mad Dogs And Englishmen tour.
Maybe he was having a off night but the searing vocals I remember listening to on the early LPs that gave Gregg Allman a good run for his money were sorely lacking from the beginning.
The place was indeed packed to the rafter seats as the Oklahoma icon came on stage sat down at his piano and commenced a 90 plus minute musical retrospective of his over half century career.
