Nathan Haines took over Auckland’s Powerstation with an 11-piece band, all in support of his new album, Notes. The 13th Floor’s Monique Perera and Den O’Keeffe were there to bring you the pictures and the words.
A Sunday night of great Jazz music, touching on many genres. Nathan Haines and the band deliver a near perfect set tonight. I don't know what this music is, but I like it says father and bass player Kevin Haines. He is quoting a friend of his listening to him playing in the Sixties.
Saturday June 13th held space for a beautiful marriage between eastern and western improvisational worlds with Nathan Haines Live at Ponsonby Social Club featuring the eclectic Jonathan Crayford on keyboards and Tabla exponent Manjit Singh.
There is something quite fascinating about jazz. The syncopation, its intricacies, the structure of the music itself, or sometimes the lack of it. The fact that it features in or has influenced so many other musicians work; like the fantastic Jordan Rakei who performed just the night before at Auckland's Powerstation.
