For decades, much of the excitement in jazz has come from Europe, partly because the jazz seed found such fertile soil there, mingling with Italian and Balkan and heaven knows how many other folk traditions to produce colourful new hybrids.
The best of it worked as modern American composed music but it rarely worked as jazz – the solos being mostly pinches of spice sprinkled over elaborate recipes.
