The Michigan return of The War and Treaty, Over the Rhine: Two warm homecomings
On Sunday night, Over The Rhine brought their uniquely American sound to the home of English Folk Music. The Kennedy Hall in Cecil Sharp House is an imposing room and appeared to be full.
Shortly before performing Merle Haggard's downer Christmas song, "If We Make It Through December," Over The Rhine co-leader Linford Detweiler remarked how his wife (and other half of OTR) Karin Bergquist recently described the act's holiday sounds as "reality Christmas music."
And when a duo includes a song
With their Simon and Garfunkel-style harmonies and Chet Atkins-inspired guitar picking, Los Angeles-based folk duo The Milk Carton Kids proved the ideal opener for Over the Rhine.
They rule their home state’s venues, stealthily sell out shows across the country, and sell thousands of albums on their own while somehow remaining virtually unknown.
The last few years have produced the art rock Films for Radio, the addicting double album Ohio, and the intimate and personal Drunkard’s Prayer, not to mention a few internet-only live albums that have been sold to dedicated fans along the way.
