Tarja Soile Susanna Turunen Cabuli (born August 17, 1977, in Kitee, Finland), better known as Tarja Turunen (while she was vocalist of Nightwish) or simply Tarja, is a Finnish singer. Tarja began to study music at age six, and moved to the city of Kuopio at 18 to study at the Sibelius Academy.
As Rowland et al made their way onto the cramped stage they launched straight into ‘Contact’, from their latest opus ‘Condemned’, and from the off they brought us a decent display of their own brand of metalcore which was topped with a healthy dose of thrash running through its veins.
Despite the growing popularity of the band, which gained recognition thanks to the album ‘Oceanborn’ released in 1998, she continued her studies and also performed as a soloist in operas and ballets such as Evankeliumi. She studied at the Academy of Music in Karlsruhe in Germany.
While it doesn’t offer a bill of bands to rival Bloodstock’s lineup, surely the thrill of seeing Nightwish’s ex-chanteuse would pull in the hordes? But by 8pm, when AMARANTHE come on, the Forum is a quarter full.
