Well it’s Friday night and William Basinski is in town. That’s quite a coup for the Attenborough Arts Centre’s spring season, the iconic electronic musician seems to head away from his LA base for brief bursts these days.
William Basinski, who you might call the enfant terrible of minimalist composition, does his own thing. Performing what he only half jokingly refers to as his ‘end of the world show’, as a performer and showman Basinski is the polar opposite of his music.
William Basinski’s musical output stretches back four decades but he’s best known for his 2001 album The Disintegration Loops, an extended ambient opus of sorts that has taken on greater significance due to the context of its creation.
It aestheticizes doom, opening a door onto once and future catastrophes, those that are imminent and those that, once believed to be imminent, are now detours in a past that turned out otherwise.
The biennial arts festival showcases a diverse range of talent from around the world over the course of just over two weeks, with this year's event being held between 29th June and 16th July at venues all across the Greater Manchester area.
